Tankless vs. Traditional Water Heaters: Which Is Right for You?

By Cregger Plumbing, Heating, Cooling & Electrical

A licensed Cregger plumber installing a modern, high-capacity tankless water heater system in a spacious Bloomfield basement.

Choosing a new water heater isn’t just about replacing old equipment — it’s about long-term comfort, energy efficiency, and cost savings. Many Metro Detroit homeowners are asking whether a tankless water heater is worth the investment compared to a traditional storage tank system.

Cregger — trusted experts in heating, cooling, plumbing, and electrician — helps homeowners across Ferndale, Royal Oak, Berkley, Birmingham, Troy, and surrounding communities compare options and make confident decisions.

If you’re weighing tank vs. tankless, here’s what you need to know.

How Does a Traditional Water Heater Work?

Traditional water heaters store and continuously heat a large tank of water — typically 40 to 50 gallons for residential homes.

When you turn on a faucet:

  1. Hot water leaves the tank.
  2. Cold water enters to refill it.
  3. The burner or heating element reheats the tank.

This system is reliable and familiar, which is why many Michigan homes still use them.

Pros of Traditional Water Heaters

  • Lower upfront installation cost
  • Simpler installation process
  • Reliable performance for moderate usage

Cons

  • Limited hot water supply
  • Higher standby energy loss
  • Shorter lifespan (8–12 years)

If your current system is aging, Cregger can evaluate whether repair or replacement is the smarter financial move.

How Does a Tankless Water Heater Work?

A tankless water heater heats water on demand rather than storing it. When you turn on a tap, cold water flows through a heat exchanger, which rapidly warms it before delivery.

There’s no storage tank and no standby heating.

Pros of Tankless Water Heaters

  • Endless hot water
  • Greater energy efficiency
  • Longer lifespan (15–20+ years)
  • Space-saving design

Cons

  • Higher upfront installation cost
  • May require electrical or gas line upgrades
  • Higher equipment cost

If your household frequently runs out of hot water, upgrading to a tankless water heater may provide noticeable improvement.

Call Cregger today to schedule a consultation and explore your options.

Energy Efficiency: Which System Performs Better?

Energy efficiency is one of the biggest differences between tank and tankless systems.

Traditional Tank Efficiency

Tank systems maintain water temperature 24/7. This creates standby heat loss, meaning energy is used even when you’re not actively using hot water.

In Michigan winters, when incoming water is colder, tanks must work even harder to maintain temperature.

Tankless Energy Efficiency

A tankless water heater only heats water when needed. That eliminates standby heat loss and reduces overall energy usage.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, tankless systems can be significantly more efficient for homes that use less than 41 gallons of hot water per day — and still provide savings for larger households.

Over time, that efficiency can offset the higher upfront investment.

Stay energy-smart year-round — schedule a water heater consultation with Cregger today.

Upfront Installation Costs: What to Expect

When comparing systems, installation cost matters.

Traditional Water Heater Costs

  • Lower equipment price
  • Minimal modifications required
  • Straightforward replacement

For homeowners replacing an existing tank system, installation is typically simple.

Tankless Water Heater Costs

  • Higher equipment price
  • Possible gas line upgrades
  • Venting adjustments
  • Electrical capacity modifications

Because tankless systems require precise installation, working with experienced professionals is critical.

Cregger provides transparent pricing so you understand the full scope of installation before work begins.

Long-Term Savings: Is Tankless Worth It?

While a tankless water heater costs more upfront, it may deliver long-term value in several ways.

1. Lower Utility Bills

Reduced energy consumption means ongoing monthly savings.

2. Longer Lifespan

Tankless systems often last nearly twice as long as traditional tanks.

3. Reduced Leak Risk

Without a large storage tank, the risk of catastrophic water damage decreases.

4. Increased Home Value

Energy-efficient upgrades are attractive to buyers in competitive Metro Detroit markets.

If you plan to stay in your home long-term, tankless may provide greater overall return on investment.

Household Size and Usage Matter

Choosing between systems depends heavily on household demand.

Traditional Tanks May Be Ideal If:

  • You have moderate hot water usage
  • Budget is a primary concern
  • Your existing system is easy to replace

Tankless May Be Ideal If:

  • You have a large family
  • Multiple showers run simultaneously
  • You want energy efficiency
  • You’re remodeling or upgrading

Cregger evaluates your household’s usage patterns before recommending a solution.

How Michigan’s Climate Impacts Your Decision

In Southeast Michigan, incoming water temperatures drop significantly during winter months. This means water heaters must raise temperatures more dramatically than in warmer states.

A properly sized tankless water heater can handle these demands — but sizing is critical. Undersized systems may struggle during peak winter usage.

Professional installation ensures your system performs efficiently even during subzero temperatures.

Cregger understands Michigan climate challenges and designs solutions accordingly.

Maintenance Requirements: Tank vs. Tankless

Both systems require maintenance — but the type differs.

Traditional Maintenance

  • Annual tank flush
  • Anode rod inspection
  • Valve checks

Tankless Maintenance

  • Annual descaling (especially in mineral-rich areas)
  • Filter cleaning
  • Heat exchanger inspection

Regular service extends system lifespan and maintains efficiency.

Stay proactive — book annual water heater maintenance with Cregger today.

When to Replace Instead of Repair

If your existing system:

  • Is over 10 years old
  • Requires frequent repairs
  • Shows signs of corrosion
  • Struggles to meet demand

Replacement may be more cost-effective than ongoing repairs.

Cregger provides honest recommendations tailored to your home’s needs and budget.

Cregger Plumbing and Josh in particular were awesome. Had water come through basement ceiling tiles and he found a defective valve on the dishwasher that was continuously dripping. He recommended that we either get it fixed or consider getting a new one since this one is 18 years old. He said sitting was an appliance issue it was a no charge visit. No bad since he had to diagnose it.
