Across Metro Detroit, plenty of condos and townhomes get every bit of their heat and air conditioning from one cabinet in a closet on an outside wall. That cabinet is often a MagicPak, an all-in-one, through-the-wall system with the heating section, air conditioner and blower built together and a louver in the wall for outdoor air. These units typically last 15 to 20 years. Our crews replace and install them across Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties, and repair the ones that still have years left.
MagicPak Replacement in Ferndale, Farmington and Metro Detroit
A new through-the-wall unit has to fit a space the building set decades ago. The replacement must line up with the existing wall sleeve and exterior louver, tie into the ductwork already in place, and run on the same gas or electric service the old unit used. MagicPak builds its V-Series to the original cabinet dimensions, so it slides into most existing openings as a direct swap. The M-Series has a smaller louver that can be customized, which helps when an association wants a different look on the outside wall.
Replacement usually makes more sense than another repair when:
- Your unit has passed the 15-year mark and service calls are coming closer together.
- The compressor has quit, or an older unit is leaking refrigerant on the cooling side.
- A gas unit has a cracked heat exchanger, a carbon monoxide hazard that should never be patched.
- The data plate on the cabinet lists R-22, a refrigerant the United States no longer produces.
- Your utility bills rise every season while the rooms feel less comfortable.
Gas, All-Electric or Heat Pump Models
MagicPak offers three basic setups, and in most buildings the right replacement matches the setup already in the closet.
- Gas heat with electric cooling: This is the standard choice in buildings with gas service, and current gas models reach up to 95% AFUE.
- All-electric: Electric resistance heat pairs with air conditioning in buildings that have no gas lines.
- Heat pump: One refrigerant system handles heating and cooling, with 3 to 10 kW of electric backup heat for January cold snaps. Our heat pump services page covers how these systems work.
A MagicPak counts as a single packaged vertical unit in industry terms, so parts and replacements are specific to this style of equipment. Changing fuel types is possible in some buildings, but it may call for association approval and a panel upgrade to carry the extra electrical load. Current MagicPak production runs on R-454B, a lower-impact refrigerant, which moves you away from older refrigerants that cost more to service every year.
How We Install a New All-in-One Unit
Good installations are planned before anyone unbolts the old cabinet. Here is how our technicians handle every MagicPak installation:
Survey the space: We measure the wall sleeve, the louver and the closet so the new unit fits without cutting into the building.
Confirm the setup: We verify which configuration your building supports, from gas heat with electric cooling to all-electric or a heat pump with backup heat.
Right-size the unit: We match cooling capacity to your square footage, within a range of three-quarters of a ton to three tons.
Meet code: We check venting, the gas line and electrical capacity against current code and pull the mechanical permit Michigan requires for equipment replacement.
Install and verify: We remove the old unit, set the new one, connect ductwork and thermostat, and run heating and cooling before we leave.
If the gas supply to the closet needs attention, our licensed plumbers handle gas line plumbing under the same roof. See our heating installation page for more on how we approach new equipment.
MagicPak Repair When Replacement Can Wait
A younger unit that stops working often needs one part, not a whole new cabinet. Common culprits include a blower motor or capacitor, an igniter or flame sensor on gas models, a heating element on electric models, a control board or a plugged condensate drain. Our technician tracks down the failed part, orders by the model and serial number on the data plate, and explains the fix before any work begins. For other heating breakdowns, our heating repair page explains what a service visit covers.
When the unit is borderline, we lay out the repair and the replacement side by side so you can compare them on your own terms. If your MagicPak runs on a heat pump, our heat pump repair team works on those systems year-round.
Maintenance That Protects Your New MagicPak
One tune-up a year keeps a new unit running the way it should: a heat exchanger inspection on gas models, a coil cleaning, a drain flush and a check that the exterior louver is clear. Members of our Home Care Club get priority service scheduling, no dispatch fee and a free annual full HVAC service health check. Read more about what a heating tune-up includes on our furnace maintenance page.

Magicpak FAQs
-
What Is A MagicPak?
It’s a good idea to have your system inspected every few years, especially in older homes.
-
Is a MagicPak the same as a packaged HVAC unit?
It is a type of packaged unit. Any packaged system puts heating and cooling in one cabinet, but most packaged HVAC units sit outdoors on a slab or a roof. A MagicPak installs indoors, in a closet against an exterior wall, which is why a replacement has to match the wall sleeve instead of a pad or roof curb.
-
How many years will a MagicPak last?
Expect 15 to 20 years from most units. Yearly maintenance, regular filter changes and a louver free of leaves and debris help a unit reach the upper end of that range.
-
Will a replacement fit the opening I already have?
Usually, yes. The V-Series is built to the original MagicPak cabinet dimensions for this exact purpose. We measure the sleeve, louver and closet before we quote, so the fit is confirmed ahead of time.
-
How do I know what size MagicPak I need?
MagicPak units range from three-quarters of a ton to three tons of cooling. Square footage, window area, sun exposure and the existing opening all affect the right size, so we confirm it in person rather than copying the old label.
-
Does my condo association need to approve a MagicPak replacement?
In many buildings, yes. Michigan condominiums operate under a master deed and bylaws, and associations often regulate exterior louvers, equipment changes and contractor access. Ask your board before you schedule, and we can provide equipment specs for its review.
-
Can a gas MagicPak be swapped for a heat pump?
In some buildings. The answer depends on your electrical capacity and your association rules. MagicPak heat pump models carry electric backup heat for Metro Detroit winters, and our heat pump services page explains how they work.
-
Should I repair an older MagicPak that runs on R-22?
A small electrical or ignition repair can still make sense. A refrigerant leak or a failed compressor usually tips the decision toward replacement, because R-22 is no longer produced and the remaining supply is costly.
-
Do you offer financing on a new MagicPak?
Yes. We offer 0% financing through Service Finance and GoodLeap, and GoodLeap uses a soft credit check until funding is finalized. Visit our financing page to review the options.
-
Can you come out at night or on a weekend?
Yes. We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Home Care Club members also get priority scheduling and pay no dispatch fee; see the membership page for the full list of benefits.
